Day One
Early afternoon departure from West Dover, VT traveling to Albany, NY for additional departures. We journey to Gettysburg, PA by deluxe motorcoach. Dinner is on your own en route to Pennsylvania. We arrive in the early evening and check into our hotel for the next two evenings.
Day Two
A hearty breakfast is served at the hotel before we start our day of exploration in Gettysburg. This morning we travel to the David Wills House for a tour. Attorney David Wills' home in Gettysburg was not just the center of Gettysburg, it was the center of the immense clean-up process after the Battle of Gettysburg and where President Abraham Lincoln put the finishing touches on his Gettysburg Address. The speech transformed Gettysburg's community from a place of devastation to the symbol of our nation's new birth of freedom. The Wills House nowl open to the public with a museum featuring six galleries, two of which include rooms that have been restored to their 1863 appearance: Will's office where he received letters from families looking for loved ones after the battle and undertook plans for a national cemetery and its dedication; and the bedroom where Lincoln stayed the night before he delivered the Gettysburg Address. Following our visit we travel to the Gettysburg National Historic Park Visitor Center. Newly opened in 2008, the center has information to orient visitors to the park and Gettysburg, hosts a museum on the Civil War from beginning to dramatic end featuring items from the massive museum collection of Civil War and Gettysburg artifacts, and houses the fully restored Gettysburg Cyclorama. The $135 million dollar project has been funded through generous donations of corporations and individuals alike. The new facility also will include a feature film experience that will immerse the audience in the sights, sounds and emotions of the battle and its aftermath, while theaters in the galleries will offer short films that focus on each of the three days of battle. Interactive stations located throughout the new museum will give visitors access to information about the people, the battle, the collection and the monuments. A new Cyclorama Gallery will display the completely restored Gettysburg Cyclorama painting, including the original skyline, the canopy and the original three-dimensional diorama that have been missing for more than 40 years. For the first time in decades, visitors will be able to view the restored painting as the artist originally intended. On the mezzanine level, visitors will encounter exhibits on the history of the Gettysburg Cyclorama painting and its restoration, as well as the history of the original Cyclorama Building. Lunch is on your own at the new Visitor Center. This afternoon we enjoy a guided tour of the park by a National Park Ranger. We conclude our day with a fabulous buffet dinner served at the Dobbins House Tavern. (B,D)
