Maritime Magic

Day 1

Today you meet your Tour Director in Portland, Maine, who will accompany the tour throughout the Maritimes. Depart for an overnight crossing to Yarmouth, NS. Dinner is included this evening. You will have Class A Cabins on the crossing. The ship has a restaurant, slot machines, gambling, shows and entertainment. (D)

Day 2

Upon our arrival in Canada we travel through Customs before heading to Halifax along the Evangeline Trail, named after the famous heroine of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem, "Evangeline", the trail runs along the sea through Acadian Country. Stops include Church Point site of the largest wooden church in North America and a visit to Fort Anne or Port Royal, site of the oldest settlements. At Grand Pre National Historic Site, a stone church stands as a memorial to the Acadians and houses an exhibit on the Deportation of these peoples, who were banished by the English. Journeying on, Halifax is the destination for the next two evenings. (B,D)

Day 3

Begin the day with a visit to Peggy's Cove, a wonderful scenic fishing village with a post office in its lighthouse. The rock strewn landscape is very different. This afternoon, a guided tour of Halifax features a visit to the fortress called the "Citadel", which dominates the City. A stop at Halifax Public Gardens show that it is based on the Victorian formal garden plans of St. James Park in England. The tour will include the cemetery where many of the victims of the Titantic disaster are buried. Free time allows a visit to the Marine Museum for those who wish to see more Titanic displays. Or this time can be used to wander along the busy waterfront. This evening, a dinner cruise will give a view of Halifax from its famous Harbor. (B, Dinner Cruise)

Day 4

Motor to Cape Breton and stop in Truro, one of the area's where the tidal bore may be viewed. This phenomenon occurs when a large volume of tidal water is forced into an ever-narrowing inlet and actually forms a small wave known as a bore, which occurs only at specific times. The towns of New Glasgow and Antigonish reflect a heavy Scottish Heritage of Nova Scotia, which means New Scotland. Crossing the Canso Causeway, the tour enters Cape Breton Island for a two night stay. (B,D)

Day 5

This morning, a visit to the Alexander Graham Bell Museum gives a comprehensive look at this amazing, man's studies and inventions in the field of teaching the deaf, invention of the telephone and experiments in aviation. The rest of the day is spent on the Cabot Trail. This scenic highway begins in the Bras d'Or Lake area and extends along the coast for over 180 miles. It is known as one of the most beautiful drives in North America. There will be stops along the way for picture taking , admiring the views and visiting a shop with native crafted goods and a breathtaking descent near the end of the trail. (B,D)

Day 6
Cape Breton is left behind as we travel through the countryside to catch the ferry to Prince Edward Island. Upon reaching the Island, the group will never be far from the sea as the island is only three miles wide in some places. Known as the Garden of the Gulf, the Island has been described as two huge beaches separated by potato fields. Tonight, enjoy entertainment with Dinner. (B,D)

Day 7
An all day tour of Price Edward Island with a local step-on guide includes a visit to the beaches, a drive through the countryside, and a visit to Anne of Green Gables National Park. Anne is the symbol of the Island and the popularity of her story has spread throughout the world. Charlottetown is the Province's Capitol and the largest town and was the location of the Conference which led to the forming of the Confederation of Canada. After a busy day of touring, relax and experience a wonderful dinner.

Day 8
Leaving Prince Edward Island, journey across the Confederation Bridge into the Province of New Brunswick. Travel to Magnetic Hill in Moncton for a gravity defying experience. Continue to the City of St. John and see the Reversing Falls. The high tidal changes actually force the Saint John River to flow upstream. Over the course of a day, the Falls actually
seem to reverse themselves, flowing first downstream to the sea and upstream toward interior New Brunswick. Dinner is included this evening. (B,D)

Day 9
After breakfast, we leave Canada behind crossing into Maine. Soon after crossing the border, we again cross briefly into Canada to visit Campobello, Franklin D. Roosevelt' summer home and retreat. One of the only internationally managed parks, it combines the United States and Canada in a unique alliance. We continue onto Bar Harbor, where a drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain completes the day with a panoramic view of the mountains and islands dotting the Atlantic Ocean. We overnight in the Bar Harbor area and enjoy a traditional Lobsterbake with the Bar Harbor Lobsterbake Company. (B,D)
